Pupils step back to Tudor times

Pupils as Ashleworth Primary School took a step back in time at the village's Tythe Barn.

The youngsters desigend their own table tops and costumes and even created their own banquet as part of a Tudor-themed celebration.

The event also involved members of the community who came along to help the children learn. The day followed on from the topic of the Tudors, which the students have been studying in class.

Gary Law, head teacher as the school, said: "It was a fantastic day for the pupils, who really got into the spirit of things and learned all about the Tudors.

"It was great to get the community involved as well."

This school could teach others a lesson

GIVEN the number of small, rural schools that are closing, it's great to see one that is thriving and doing great things, just outside the city.

Founded 168 years ago, Ashleworth School is fortunate in not only having dedicated head teacher, Gary Law, and his hard-working staff, but also a team of parents who are doing everything possible to raise the school's profile.

One of them told me the school has a very active PTFA and "loads of support from the people in the village with local history and experience on our doorstep".

Even villagers without children of school age are keen to keep Ashleworth School going. They recently held an 'Open Gardens' event, with nine gardens involved and cream teas en-route, raising over £600, which could create a sensory garden for the school.

Other rundraisers have included a 'bring your dad to school' and a 'wear the wrong trousers day'.

The children are also recruiting members of their 'School Council' for September.

Too many village schools have closed already, so i hope this one can survive.

Wall-done to charity climbers

CHILDREN reached for the sky in one big effort to raise cash for charity.

Ashleworth Primary School chose a very different way to clock up their mile for Sport Relief - with a climbing wall.

Headteacher Gary Law said: "We just wanted to do something different.

"We wanted to support the charity, but we wanted to put our own twist on it, so we had the climbing wall over from Gloucester. They were very supportive and came over for free.

"The children worked out how many climbs it would take to cover a mile. It worked out at around 200 climbs, and everyone had a go. I did the first one and we did 213 in total, so way over a mile.

"We all had a fantastic time, and there was such a buzz out on the green. Parents came along to join us and even passers-by were stopping."
